The Egret Collection: Behind the Work

The Egret Collection: Behind the Work

This new collection came together layer by layer. I started with pencil sketches, figuring out the composition first, then played with colors and layout digitally before moving to canvas.

Each piece went through so many stages — paint, collage, drawing, pulling back, layering again — until the surface felt complete but not overworked.

Inspiration

Egrets always find their way into my work. They’re graceful, beautiful — and they make endless, interesting shapes.

ASCEND I | 30"X40"

This series was inspired by a large egret piece I had in my dining room, but I tried a few new things: exploring texture and transparency in different ways, experimenting with grid compositions, and removing the egret forms entirely for one piece — Rooted, an abstract work created from similar colors and textures.

FLY AWAY | 96"X72" — THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS SERIES

ROOTED | 48"X48" STYLED IN MY KITCHEN HALLWAY

Process

I used paint, various collage papers, charcoal, pencils, ink, and conte crayon. Every layer added a different kind of energy. Sometimes I used a palette knife or scraper to pull paint back and reveal what was underneath.

There’s nothing more satisfying than those final touches before varnish — seeing how all the layers finally come together.

Working in Series

I usually work on several pieces at once. Not always at the same stage, but they progress together. It helps keep the collection cohesive while letting each painting have its own direction.

The Experiment

One of the best surprises happened when I started painting (with various opacities) in between the drips. It created incredible texture — areas of transparency and contrast that added even more depth to the work.

That’s something I’ll definitely bring into the next collection.

FINISHING TOUCHES ON DRIFT II | 36"X48"

Mindset

I painted everything in my home studio, usually while listening to my favorite Spotify playlist. The process felt experimental and energizing.

I love working within a single theme and continuing to refine it — whether it’s a painting, a design, or even my home — I like building on ideas and seeing how they evolve.
